We lose money recommending Google Fiber.
Before we explain the title, let’s set the stage.
Google Fiber presents a tremendous opportunity for Kansas City businesses. $100 a month for a Gigabit of data… but what does that actually mean?
On a typical broadband connection, you can stream 1-2 high definition movies at the same time. With a Gigabit connection, you can stream 208 high definition movies at the same time. It’s not far from the truth to say it’s 100 times faster. And it’s less expensive than what you are currently paying for.
Our competitors don’t want to recommend Google Fiber because they’ll lose money.
Our customers tell us stories about other internet providers saying that Google Fiber isn’t a good solution. In fact, that’s not the case. The reasons amount to scare tactics that allow them to continue making a lot of money on weaker solutions.
We recommend Google Fiber even though it results in less revenue.
When we sell other types of connectivity like fiber or T1 lines, we make some money. There is no money when we recommend Google Fiber. But it’s the right thing to do for our customers, so we recommend it all the time.
Avid is a Google Tech Partner
We knew that becoming the first Google Tech Partner would be of tremendous value to our customers and other businesses here in Kansas City.
One of the key components of being able to get the most out of our relationship with Google is to have a direct connection with the Google Fiber network. This direct connection is critical because it allows us to guarantee business class voice services. (For those of you that are technical, these services include our cloud based VoIP phone service, PRI trunks, SIP trunks and regular telephone lines.)
This direct connection with the Google Fiber network is important because it means that voice traffic that originates on the Google Fiber network is routed directly to Avid’s network and doesn’t take an uncertain path over the open Internet. Voice traffic can suffer from an unpredictable internet connection. Any network delay can result in “jitter,” which causes the voices to sound “choppy.” Avid’s direct connection to Google Fiber prevents this from happening.
We’ve been working with Google for over a year now, and we’ve converted, or are in the process of converting, hundreds of customers to Google Fiber for their voice and data traffic. This conversion significantly increases our customer’s bandwidth and significantly reduces their monthly expense. And yes, we lose money when we recommend Google Fiber over other connectivity solutions. But doing business like that is the only way to have a lasting relationship with our clients because they know we have their best interests at heart.
